5 Factors That Affect Tissue
When it comes to performing treatments that involve triggering the inflammation or the wound healing response, it is important we are working with healthy tissue that is able to recover from treatment.
There are certain factors we can look for during consultation that may affect how the client will respond, their healing time, or their suitability to the treatment.
Here are some of the main factors that can affect tissue:
Nutrition – the healing process places a great demand on the body`s store of nutrients. Adequate protein in the diet is important as most of the structural components of a tissue are proteins. Vitamins also play a direct role in wound healing and tissue repair.
Blood circulation - is essential to transport oxygen, nutrients, antibodies and many defensive cells to the injured site.
Age - Tissue heals faster and will leave less obvious scars in the young than in the aged. Factors such as Menopause (or Estrogen deficiency) can also be detrimental to wound healing processes, notably inflammation and re-granulation.
Infection – clinically the most important cause of delay in healing – prolongs inflammation and potentially increases the local tissue injury.
Glucocorticoids (steroids) have well-documented anti-inflammatory effects, inhibits angiogenesis and suppresses endothelial proliferation.
